February 13 2009

The artist Melvin Moti won the Dolf Henkes Award: 20.000 euros as well as a contribution to an art exhibition. Wim van Krimpen, chairman of the jury, announced this on Friday Februari 13th during a festive meeting in Ariminius, Podium voor Kunst, Cultuur en Debat, Rotterdam. The other nominees were artists Wendelien van Oldenborgh and Anne Wenzel.

The jury consisted of Mariëtte Dölle (programme director of TENT. Rotterdam), Wim van Krimpen (chairman, director of the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag), Erik van Lieshout (artist, Rotterdam/Cologne) and Arno van Roosmalen (manager of Stroom Den Haag).

The Dolf Henkes Award is a two-yearly prize that is awarded to an artist who fits in with the profile that was outlined by its namesake, the artist Dolf Henkes: young, idiosyncratic and fostering a special bond with Rotterdam and/or the Netherlands Antilles. At the artist's own request, a part of the artistic estate of Dolf Henkes is spent on an encouragement award for young artists. This award has been granted since 2004. Earlier winners are Erik van Lieshout and Jeroen Eisinga.
